The Nintendo Entertain System(NES) launched in North America on October 18th, 1985.*40 During the height of its popularity the NES controlled almost 80% of the home console market.*41 Production of the NES stopped in August of 1995*42, with sales numbers over its lifetime in excess of 61 million, putting it 10th on all-time console sales.*43
Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System(SNES) was launched in North America on August 23rd, 1991.*44 Production of the SNES continued in Japan until well into 2003.*45 With lifetime sales over 49 million systems sold.*46
Nintendo 64
The Nintendo 64(N64) launched in North America on September 29, 1996.*47 Over its lifetime production and sales, which ended in 2004, it had sold more than 32 million units.*48
GameCube
The GameCube launched in North America on November 18th, 2001.*49 During the lifetime of the GameCube more than 22 million systems were sold globally.*50 Production of the GameCube stopped in 2007.*51
Wii
The Wii launched in North America on November 19th, 2006 to great commercial success.*52 Wii sales and production continue to this day. However as of 2016 Wii sales have reached 101 million consoles sold worldwide. This brings it in at number 5 in all time console sales.*53
Wii U
The Wii U launched in North America on November 18, 2012.*54 This is Nintendo’s latest and current home console. Production and sale continue to this day, however sales of the Wii U have been extremely lackluster and it lags substantially behind the PS4 and Xbox One with only about 13 million consoles sold.*55
